Adam’s Apple Reduction
Achieve the aesthetic you desire
The Adam’s apple is a particularly prominent feature of the male neck, sometimes too prominent for your personal taste. Whether you want to reduce the size of your Adam’s apple as a part of your gender transformation surgery, or simply to make it less noticeable, thyroid cartilage reduction may be the right option for you.

The results you deserve
The Adam’s apple is one of the most distinct differences between men and women. Men tend to have a very prominent Adam’s apple. Women also have this cartilage, but it is significantly less obvious or completely unnoticeable. If you are undergoing male-to-female surgery, this is an area you will likely want to address as part of the feminisation process.
One major concern with Adam’s apple reduction surgery is the potential for vocal cord damage. As a fully trained ear, nose and throat surgeon, you can be assured Dr Gerarchi’s training gives you the best chance of protecting your vocal cords, and also retaining the optimum amount of Adam’s apple cartilage right up to your vocal cords.
Feminisation surgery is often a multi-step process that requires expertise and experience beyond the scope of many plastic surgeons today. Dr Gerarchi has the training and experience to achieve the best results from your gender transformation. With precision and attention to detail during each procedure, paired with the highest level of patient care and compassion, Dr Gerarchi can help you complete your transformation process.
If your Adam’s apple is disproportionately large, the protrusion on the neck can be more than a cosmetic concern. You may find it uncomfortable to wear some shirts or neckties due to the protrusion. In these cases, Dr Gerarchi can make a slight adjustment to the size of the Adam’s apple during thyroid cartilage reduction to make it more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing.
Meeting your surgeon
During your initial meeting with Dr Gerarchi, you will have the opportunity to discuss your concerns and the results you desire from your procedure. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions so you have a full understanding of what to expect before, during and after your surgery. Dr Gerarchi will also collect a full medical history and current health status to ensure your procedure will be both safe and successful.
Your thyroid cartilage reduction journey
For many patients it is possible to perform thyroid cartilage reduction surgery using a local anaesthetic. Dr Gerarchi will make an incision in the throat just under your chin, ensuring visible scarring will be safely hidden in the natural folds of your skin as much as possible. Once the throat muscles are separated, the tracheal cartilage is shaved down to reduce its size. Extreme care is taken during surgery to provide a result which ensures the cartilage will not grow back after your procedure.
Most patients are able to return home within a few hours of their thyroid cartilage reduction surgery. The surgical site will be covered with a dressing to protect the incision during the early days. Swelling and bruising is common after thyroid cartilage reduction, but these side effects generally resolve quickly. The swelling will not interfere with your ability to breathe, even if it becomes rather pronounced for the first day or two.
Your post-procedure journey
In the first few days following your procedure, you may notice you voice seems ‘weak’; this is normal and temporary. While it is possible, it is extremely rare for there to be any damage to the vocal cords during a tracheal shave, particularly when it is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr Gerarchi. You should be able to return to your regular activities within about one week following this procedure.
Managing your pain and recovery
To ensure your recovery is as comfortable and efficient as possible, Dr Gerarchi will prescribe oral pain medication. An antibiotic may also be prescribed to prevent infection during the recovery process.
Whether you are interested in thyroid cartilage reduction surgery as a part of your male-to-female surgery or simply reduce your Adam’s apple, Dr Gerarchi is experienced in both types of procedures and can help you reach your aesthetic goals.
