Jawline Reshaping

Creating a more pleasing silhouette

Unless your jawline is overly prominent, you may not give it much thought. But for those who feel it is noticeably detracting from the rest of their appearance, it can be a source of embarrassment and self-consciousness.  Altering your jawline could simply provide you with a more harmonious facial aesthetic, or it could also be part of your facial feminisation surgery, if you are undergoing a male-to-female transformation.

Meeting your surgeon

During your initial consultation, Dr Paul Gerarchi will conduct an assessment of both your jawline and face, analysing your muscle and bone structure in the area needing reshaping. This allows him to them discuss and formulate a plan to achieve your goals in a safe and efficient manner. Realistic expectations will be discussed, all risks discussed and questions answered. By obtaining a full understanding of your specific situation, a tailored procedure will be effectively implemented by Dr Gerarchi.

Your jawline reshaping journey

When your jawline reshaping surgery begins, you will be placed under general anaesthesia. All incisions will be positioned within the mouth to avoid any visible scarring. The first incision is placed beside the jaw, between the cheek and the gum, allowing sufficient access to the area of concern.

Following this, Dr Gerarchi will use several instruments to both shave and reshape your jaw into the desired position and appearance. Disolvable sutures will be used to close the incision once the procedure is complete, and a compression garment will be placed on the jaw to stabilise the area during your healing journey.

Your recovery

For the first month or so following your surgery, it is likely that you will experience swelling around the jawline. This is a normal side-effect, and it  will settle and subside with time. Elevated sleeping and the use of a cold pack on the area as needed will help with swelling and pain relief. Eating for the first weeks following the surgery should follow a soft diet, as pain when chewing will persist.

Keep in mind that swelling may prevent the contours of the jaw from being evident for four to six weeks following surgery. Patience is important during this time as you await the final, more defined outcome of your jaw reshaping procedure.

Managing your pain and recovery

Dr Gerarchi will prescribe all necessary pain relief medication prior to you returning home after your surgery. Be sure to discuss medications that have not been personally prescribed by Dr Gerarchi with him before you ingest them. This will ensure the medication does not negatively interfere with your recovery process.

Prior to your surgery taking place, Dr Gerarchi will schedule your follow-up appointments. During these appointments, spaced evenly over your recovery period, Dr Gerarchi will monitor healing, assess any possible complications and answer any questions that you may have during this time. Ongoing support is a key component to your healthy recovery and we are committed to providing the support you need throughout the healing process.
