Feeling a bit too 'highbrow'?
When your forehead seems to be disproportionately long, it can create an imbalance between your facial features. This issue can be a source of much insecurity for both men and women alike. When hair styling or cosmetic products no longer suffice to combat the issue, hairline lowering may be the answer. Also known as forehead reduction, this surgical procedure shortens the distance between the hairline and brow line to bring a more attractive contour to the upper quadrant of the face. A high or rising hairline tends to be viewed as ageing and masculinising. As such, hairline lowering is also considered part of the rejuvenation process.

The results you deserve
While hairline lowering may be undergone to correct a forehead that has always seemed disproportionate, you may also elect to have the procedure to bring your forehead into proportion following a previous brow lift. Indeed, a browlift is commonly performed in conjunction with hairline lowering. As the natural brow line droops with age, a high forehead can become more prominent; this may also prompt you to seek a correction.
Hairline lowering is most frequently performed on women, but can also be recommended for men who have neither male pattern baldness, nor a previously reconstructed hairline. You will see best results if you have a thick head of hair and no family history of hair loss; this is true for both male and female patients. Good scalp skin laxity will also ensure the best possible outcome for you. In some cases, Dr Gerarchi may recommend hair grafting with the hairline lowering procedure to further enhance your results and maintain a natural, more youthful appearance.
Meeting your surgeon
During your initial meeting with Dr Gerarchi, measurements of your forehead will be taken to determine your ideal facial proportions. This will be your opportunity to learn about what you can expect from your surgery, and ask any questions you might have about the procedure, recovery process and results. Dr Gerarchi will also take a complete health history to ensure your hairline lowering procedure will be both safe and effective for you.
Preparing for your hairline lowering procedure
If you are concerned about your high forehead and hairline, Dr Gerarchi will carefully assess factors such as hair thickness and skin tone to determine whether hairline lowering will produce your desired results. With extensive experience in this procedure, Dr Gerarchi exercises precision and care to ensure positive results which can elevate both your self-confidence and your self-esteem.
Your journey to facial harmony
You will likely have your hairline lowering as a day procedure under general anaesthesia. Incisions are placed across the upper portion of the forehead, where they will be safely hidden by the new hairline. The incision allows Dr Gerarchi to move your hairline to its new position, taking into consideration the direction of the hair growth to ensure a natural result. Most hairline lowering procedures take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to complete.
In most cases, you will be able to return home on the same day of the procedure. Dr. Gerarchi will remove your sutures within a week of the procedure. Swelling is to be expected, but this typically subsides on its own within two weeks. You will have follow-up appointments with Dr Gerarchi to remove the stitches and to evaluate your recovery progress. You can plan to return to work and regular activities within 1-2 weeks after your surgery, barring any unforeseen obstacles in your recovery process.
Your post-surgical journey
Following your surgery, you will receive post-operative instructions to keep you comfortable in the days following your procedure. These instructions will ensure your recovery is as safe and successful as possible, so they should be followed carefully. Incision care will be especially important after hairline lowering surgery in order to minimise any scarring.
Managing your pain and recovery
As you will experience some pain and swelling immediately following hairline lowering surgery, you will be provided with a prescription for pain medication which can be filled prior to your procedure. A prescription for antibiotics will also be provided to help prevent infection during your recovery journey.
Some over-the-counter medications and supplements may be restricted before and after surgery to prevent complications and enhance the healing process; it is always best to check with Dr Gerarchi before taking any medications not prescribed by him.
